The parts of a house's wiring worth understanding

None of this is visible, and all of it decides what happens in a fault. Requirements have changed several times, which is why an older house is often short of protection in places that now require it.

Two-prong and ungrounded outlets

An older house may still have ungrounded receptacles, or three-prong receptacles fitted to two-wire circuits — which looks modern and provides no ground path at all. The remedies differ: a genuine ground, or GFCI protection with the circuit correctly labelled. Which is appropriate depends on the wiring behind it.

GFCI protection where water is nearby

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, basements, crawl spaces and exterior outlets. GFCI protection detects current escaping to ground and disconnects in a fraction of a second. Requirements have expanded over successive code cycles, so an older house is frequently short of it in places that now require it.

AFCI protection against arcing

Arc-fault protection responds to the signature of an arcing connection — the failure mode behind a significant share of electrical fires — rather than to overload. It is now required in most living areas of new work, and is a worthwhile addition on older bedroom circuits during a panel replacement.

Aluminium branch wiring

Houses wired in a particular period may have aluminium branch circuits. It is not automatically a reason to rewire, but the connections need specific treatment, and ordinary devices and connectors are not suitable for it. It should be identified rather than discovered.

Hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms

Interconnected alarms sound together, so an alarm in a basement wakes people upstairs. Batteries and sealed units have their place, but interconnection is what makes the difference at night, and it is electrical work.

About residential electrical work

Do I need a dedicated circuit for a new appliance?

Large and continuous loads generally do: a range, an oven, a dryer, a well pump, a hot tub, an EV charger, a window or wall air conditioner. Sharing an existing circuit with a load like that is the most common cause of a breaker that trips whenever two things run at once, and it is also how conductors end up carrying more than they were sized for. Whether a dedicated circuit is needed comes down to the appliance's rating and what is already on the circuit.

What is an electrical safety inspection, and when is it worth doing?

A systematic look at the service, the panel, the grounding and bonding, protection devices, and a sample of the circuits and devices around the house, resulting in a written list of what is non-compliant, what is worn, and what is an actual hazard — separated out, so you can decide what to address and when. It is most worth doing before buying a house, after buying an older one, before a remodel, and if there is a history of unexplained faults.

Can you work around a remodel that other trades are also working on?

Yes, and the sequencing matters. Rough-in happens once framing is done and before insulation and drywall, and the inspection of that rough-in has to happen before the walls are closed. The most expensive mistake on a remodel is closing a wall over work that has not been inspected, so the electrical schedule is set against the drywall date rather than around it.

Will you tell me if something does not need doing?

Yes. Part of the diagnosis is separating what is a hazard, what is worn but working, and what is simply older than current requirements without being unsafe. An older panel in good condition on an adequate service is not automatically a replacement, and you should not be told it is.
