Electrical pricing looks arbitrary from the outside. Two jobs that sound the same to a homeowner can differ by a factor of five, and the reason is usually invisible: what is behind the wall, how much of the work is finding the problem rather than fixing it, and whether the job touches the service equipment.
The two ways electrical work gets priced
Almost everything falls into one of two models, and knowing which one you are being offered is the single most useful thing in this guide.
- A service call covers attending, investigating and — depending on the contractor — some amount of work once there. This is how faults, unknowns and small jobs are handled, because nobody can quote a repair for a problem that has not been identified yet.
- A project price is a fixed figure for defined work: replace this panel, install this charger, run this circuit to that wall. It is available once the scope is known, which usually means after someone has looked.
Most jobs move from the first to the second. You pay for a diagnosis, you get told what is wrong and what the options are, and then the repair or installation is quoted as defined work.
What a service call actually covers
A service call is the cost of getting a qualified person to your house with the tools and test equipment to find out what is wrong. What varies between contractors is what is included once they are there: some include a fixed period of diagnostic time, some include the first hour of work, some are purely a call-out charge with everything else on top.
Worth asking directly: does the service call include diagnosis, and is it credited against the repair if you go ahead? Both are common arrangements, and both are reasonable — but they produce very different totals, and the difference is not visible in the headline figure.
Hourly rates and project pricing
An hourly rate is honest for work whose extent is unknown — fault-finding, chasing an intermittent problem, or opening up an older installation where nobody knows what is behind the plaster. The risk sits with you: if it takes longer, it costs more.
A project price is better for defined work. The risk sits with the contractor, which is why a project price includes a margin for the things that might be found. On a well-understood job that margin is small; on an older house with unknowns it is larger, and sometimes a contractor will quote the known work firm and the unknowns hourly. That is not evasion — it is the most accurate thing they can offer.
Why diagnosis is priced differently from installation
Installing a new circuit is predictable work. Finding out why a circuit that has worked for thirty years suddenly trips is not: the fault may be at the device, at a junction, at the panel, or in a run of cable inside a wall, and the only way to know is to test until it is located.
This is why a contractor who quotes a repair over the phone should be treated with caution rather than gratitude. A price given without seeing it is either padded to cover the worst case, or it is going to change. How we approach fault-finding
Evenings, weekends and urgent work
Work outside normal hours generally costs more, because it is outside normal hours. Where a contractor offers an urgent or after-hours service, the premium should be stated before anyone is dispatched.
The judgement worth making is whether the problem is genuinely urgent. A dead outlet in a spare room can wait for a scheduled visit and be cheaper for it. A burning smell, a hot panel, sparking, or a breaker that will not reset should not wait, and paying an after-hours premium for one of those is the correct decision. What counts as urgent
Panels, generators and chargers
Larger installations are quoted as projects, and the quote depends on a survey rather than a description. For panel and service work the variables are the service size, the meter arrangement, the condition of the existing circuits and how much the utility has to be involved. For a charger or a generator, the load calculation comes first, because it determines whether the existing service can carry the new load — and that single answer can change the total substantially.

What moves the price on almost any job
- Access. A panel in an open garage is a different job from one in a full closet. An attic run in July in Oklahoma is slower than the same run in March.
- The age and condition of the existing wiring. Aluminium branch circuits, brittle insulation, or cables cut too short to reach a new panel’s terminals all add real work.
- Whether the fault has to be found first. Diagnosis is time with an unknown endpoint.
- Distance from the panel. The cable run is often the largest part of a new circuit’s cost, and it is set by geometry rather than by the device on the end.
- Whether the service equipment or the utility is involved. That adds permitting, coordination and scheduling that a branch-circuit job does not have.
- Permit and inspection fees, which are set locally rather than by the contractor. How permits work here
- Bringing related work up to current requirements. Grounding and bonding on an older house frequently need attention during a panel replacement, and it is not optional.
Comparing two quotes properly
Two quotes for “a new panel” are often not quotes for the same work. Before comparing the numbers, check that both include the same things:
- The same service size — a 100A replacement and a 200A upgrade are different jobs.
- Whether the meter and service equipment are included, or only the panel.
- Whether the permit and inspection are included, and who pulls the permit.
- Whether grounding and bonding corrections are included, or listed as extras to be discovered later.
- What happens to circuits that will not reach the new panel.
- Whether the quote is firm or an estimate, and what would change it.
A cheaper quote that excludes the permit, the grounding work and the meter is not cheaper. The most useful question to ask any contractor is simply: what is not in this price?
